When a Pokémon is created, the game stores the language version of that game. Since Pokémon Ruby Version and Pokémon Sapphire Version, and before Pokémon Diamond Version and Pokémon Pearl Version, there are six language versions: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish. The language version appears to be used only in text display to distinguish between Japanese and non-Japanese character fonts.

In Japanese language games, the player can input up to five characters for both Pokémon nicknames and Trainer names (including OT names). In other language games, the player can input up to ten characters for Pokémon nicknames and up to seven characters for Trainer names (including OT names). However, the nicknames of Pokémon from a Japanese language version, or of any Pokémon when displayed in a Japanese language game, are truncated to 5 characters in display, and in Japanese language games, Trainer names (including OT names) are truncated to 5 characters in display.
