In late June of 2001 it has been announced that a new Pokémon card set is in the works. It’s called Pokémon Card VS. (once called Pokémon Card E).

The cards have changed a whole lot. For one thing, the cards have a back side much like our English Pokémon cards. For another, the cards boast First Edition symbols and are numbered.

Finally, the cards are all Basic Pokémon - no evolution necessary! That means you can slap an evolved form of a Pokémon on your first turn!

The cards are compatible with the Card E Reader, which will come out for the GBA next year.

The cards will be released on July 19, 2001 and will cost 690 yen ($7) for the three 30-card sets that will be released first.

The cards include TMs, which are Trainer cards that act like disposable attacks.

Shown below is the new look for the card backs:

For 900 yen ($9) you’ll get this beginner’s set featuring 30 cards, damage counters, rules, a Celebi coin, and a Tyranitar card. This set will be released as a movie promo on July 7.

The first VS cards will come in three sets of 30 cards each:

Electric/Grass - Jasmine, Bugsy, Whitney, Janine

Psychic/Fighting - Will, Chuck, Morty, Bruno

Fire/Water - Clair, Falkner, Pryce, Karen
