This information might be useful when playing Pokémon HeartGold Version and Pokémon SoulSilver Version, too.

Goldenrod City

"The Festive City of Opulent Charm"

Goldenrod City is bustling with activity. Here are the features of the city.

Pokémon Center
image

Be sure to heal your Pokémon here.

Crystal version: There is a girl here that will give you Revive for each Eon Mail you have.

Underground
image

The Underground takes you from one section of the city to the other. You can find trainers and the Coin Case in the Underground. Also in the Underground, you’ll find small services which appear on certain days:

Bargain Shop: Monday mornings
The Bargain Shop sells only one of each item, which you can resell later.

Younger groomer: Wednesdays, Fridays, Sundays
Older groomer: Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays
The two Haircut brothers are of the Pokémon Salon. The groomers will make one of your Pokémon happier.

Herbal shop: Saturdays, Sundays
This shop sells herbal items, but they taste bitter and your Pokémon may not like them.

Bike Shop
image

On the right side of the city is the Bike Shop. In the shop, the manager is having trouble selling his bicycles and asks you to help advertise them by taking one home.

Game Corner
image

Try your luck and play games here to win great prizes. A Coin Case is required to play, which you can find in the Underground.

Bill’s House
image

West of the Game Corner building is Bill’s house. In here, a girl will give you the phone number of his older brother Bill, the Pokmaniac and the guy who invented the Pokémon Storage System. Calling him will tell you how much space your current Pokémon Box has, and Bill will remind you when one of your Pokémon Boxes is full.

Name Rater
image

Here is where you can change the nicknames of your Pokémon. Note that you can’t rename Pokémon that you didn’t get yourself (such as from trainers).

Radio Tower
image

The gray building is the Radio Tower. The man in the middle of the table is in charge of the Lucky Number Show. Every week a new number is drawn, and if any of your Pokémon’s ID numbers match the winning number, you win a prize, such as the Master Ball.

image

The woman on the right side will give you a Radio Card if you answer 5 questions correctly. Answer yes, yes, no, yes, and no.

The Radio Card is an adapter to your Pokégear that allows you to use the radio. The third floor and beyond can’t be accessed.

Buena’s prizes:
Ultra Ball - 2 pts
Full Restore - 2
Nugget - 3
Rare Candy - 3
Protein - 5
Iron - 5
Carbos - 5
Calcium - 5
HP Up - 5

In Pokémon Crystal Version, you can find Buena on the second floor. Talk to her, and she’ll give you a Blue Card. Every night (from six to midnight), Buena will announce a password on her radio show. Then, visit Buena in the Radio Tower and say the password. If you’re right, you’ll win one point on your Blue Card, redeemable for prizes.

If you collect 30 points (the maximum), you can get Buena’s phone number and simply say Buena’s password by phone.

Department Store
image

The building with the "MART" sign is the Department Store. Buy all you need there. What you’ll really need to do is to go to the fifth floor. Talk to the boy next to the counter will give you his Machop ("Muscle", holding Gold Berry) for your Drowzee (or, in Crystal version, your Abra.) You’ll really need this trade. Then, talk to the green girl there to activate the Mystery Gift option.

image On Sundays, a lady appears on this counter and will check the first Pokémon on your list. If she likes it ("It’s very attached to you"), she’ll give you TM27 (Return). Return inflicts more damage the more your Pokémon like you. If it looks mean, she’ll give you TM21 (Frustration). Frustration inflicts more damage the less your Pokémon like you.

image Pokémon Crystal Version boasts a rooftop in the Department Store. You can find special bargains on certain times. To find out when these bargains occur, defeat Camper Todd, south of Goldenrod City, and get his phone number. He’ll call you when there is a sale.
Train Station
image

The train station is not yet usable.

After doing everything here, go to the Pokémon Gym, at the top of Goldenrod City.

Whitney’s Pokémon Gym
Trainers here use Pokémon of the normal type like Jigglypuff and Clefairy. Normal type Pokémon are fairly resistant to many attacks, but they are weakest to the fighting type. The gym is shaped like Clefairy. image
image Whitney - The Elegant Master of Flying Pokémon
L18 Clefairy - Doubleslap, Metronome, Mimic
L20 Miltank - Rollout, Stomp, Attract, Milk Drink

imageUpon defeating her, Whitney will sob and cry when she sees you beat her. Try to leave the gym, and then talk to Whitney again. She’ll give you the Plainbadge, which raises your Pokémon’s Speed and allows you to use Strength outside of battle. You’ll also receive TM45 (Attract). Attract is almost like a paralysis attack, except it only affects the opposite gender.

Leave the gym now.

After defeating Whitney, go to the house right next to the Gym, the one that looks like a garden on the inside, and talk to the woman there. She’ll tell you about the tree that shakes when you talk to it, and that you can fight it with a Squirtbottle, which she gives to you.

Leave Goldenrod City north to Route 35.

Route 35

In the gate to Route 35, talk to the man there. He’ll give you a Spearow named Kenya that’s holding some mail. He talls you to give it to a chubby man named Randy in Route 31. The note reads:

Dark Cave leads to another road.
After receiving Kenya, proceed. The road has nothing but trainers. Weave past them if you can, until you reach another gate. Don’t talk to the officer, unless you’re playing in the daytime.

You can go to the grassy area nearby to catch more Pokémon, and find TM04 (Rollout). The Bug Catcher there will call you and tell you about swarms of Yanma in Route 35 if you beat him and get his phone number.

Or, you can go to the gates to the National Park.

National Park

Just a place to relax. In the park, you can battle the trainers on the Poké Ball-shaped grass area.

image Bug-Catching Contest

Every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, a Bug-Catching Contest is held. The rules are simple. You have 20 minutes to try to catch the strongest bug you can find using one of your Pokémon. The bugs are judged based on its stats and HP, so a L14 Pinsir or Scyther is your best bet for high points. You get 20 Park Balls to catch the bugs. When you run out of time or Park Balls, or when your Pokémon faints, the game is over. Here are the prizes:
First Place - Sun Stone (evolves Pokémon)
Second Place - Everstone (stops evolution)
Third Place - Gold Berry (restores 30 HP)
Consolation - Berry
You also get to keep the Pokémon that was judged in the contest. Also, a Bug Catching Contest can be held only once a day.

The woman sitting on the bench on the right in the park will give you a Quick Claw, which gives your Pokémon a better chance of attacking first.

Near the boy with the Game Boy is a gap in the fence. Go through the gap, and walk around. You can find the items Parlyz Heal and TM28 (Dig) this way.

East of the National Park is Route 36.

Route 36

Keep going until you see the weird tree. Examine the tree, use the Squirtbottle, and it’ll attack. The tree turns out to be Sudowoodo.

Just run away from the battle (or catch it), and it’ll disappear. Next, go east and talk to the chubby man to receive TM08 (Rock Smash). Rock Smash allows your Pokémon to crumble any small rocks that appear. Sometimes hidden Pokémon can be found under them.

image Arthur of Thursday

On Thursdays, Arthur will appear north of where the chubby man is. He’ll give you a Hard Stone, which powers up rock-type attacks. Have Geodude or Onix hold this.

Go west, then north. Continue going north, and you’ll end up in Ecruteak City.
